The Māori Curriculum Guidelines are a first attempt to establish guidelines with suggested approaches and tools for application of te reo and kaupapa Māori teaching in our Rudolf Steiner/Waldorf school environments.

They have been written to encourage the full participation of all students in the experience te reo Māori, tikanga and kaupapa Māori as a fully integrated part of not only te reo Māori lessons, but within the whole cultural life of each Rudolf Steiner School in Aotearoa New Zealand. They are written on the premise that kaupapa and te reo Māori should be considered an essential part of learning for all teachers and learners in Aotearoa New Zealand.  Based on this premise, they encourage all school teachers to embrace te Reo and kaupapa Māori in their classrooms.

This document will support our teachers in the process of developing our kura as ‘place based’ educational environments.

The goal of the guidelines is to support both Kaiako-i-te-reo-Māori and class teachers and enable  schools to explore the potential for integrating te reo and kaupapa Māori into Waldorf teaching and learning programmes. With this in mind we have made links between Steiner pedagogy, child development and appropriate Māori content at each class level. The initial aim is to assist our teachers and schools to recognize and integrate kaupapa Māori in their everyday lives and environments, and to foster the learning of te reo Māori. This document will be followed by the development of online and hard copy resources to further enable the synthesis of Māori curriculum into our classrooms, cultural norms and hearts.
