The scope of these guidelines provides the following: 

 

• definitions of common Māori concepts  

• possible programmes of learning 

• A description of the task and approach to teaching each class level for both Kaiako i te reo Māori teachers and class teachers a user-friendly approach for those class teachers and schools who are unfamiliar or have less experience with te reo and kaupapa Māori 

• Some simple rules about culturally-appropriate approaches are also listed for the true beginner  

• Informing Your Approach is for teachers who wish to build their kaupapa Māori knowledge base. 

 

A suite of six models have been included as examples of how kaupapa Māori can be incorporated into teaching and learning programs. The models have been designed for beginners to advanced kaupapa Māori teachers, and can be applied across all essential learning areas and all ages.
